Weird but Good

This will have to be a quick log as I have to be in class in less than 10 minutes. Just for context, by the time I go home tonight, today will wind up being one of those 14+ hour work days. I was driving downtown tonight to drop some books off at the library. I was feeling tired, a little stressed which for me usually means grumpy. I drove past the gym where I've been running, saw a few runners outside, and the whole thought of being active, getting the athletic gear on, and just being 'out there' running, lifting weights, etc. instantly changed my mood! I immediately focused on going running after class tonight which changed my mood completely just by giving me something to look forward to. I have a lot more energy to bring to class tonight and I'm looking forward to hearing some very smart students present their papers - with enthusiasm! Can't wait to get home, slap on the running shoes, grab a hat (it is COLD tonight) and hit the road!

Like a good little hampster

Like a good little hampster I ran around the track yesterday a few dozen times. Man I hate running on the track but it was raining and a bit cold. I know, I know ....wimp .....whatever. I ran the 28 times around the track which works out to 3.1 miles. I have no idea about the time, but the chins were really tight and burning for most of the run - I don't know what that's all about, but Ihope that crap stops pretty soon. I'm digging being on the weight machines and working the upper body. I have to find a better time to run actually - I've run around mid-day recently a few times including yesterday, and whereas it breaks up the day nicely, I'm kind of tanked for the rest of the day. I do not find it 'mentally stimulating' as some do - I just find it relaxing and tiring and I'm certainly in no mood to get back to work after running. I've been getting to work, on most days, really early 7:00 a.m. or so. I'm wondering if I shouldn't try a 6:30 run time, shower at the gym, then head over to the office from there. Or, just get in at 7, work until 3:30 or so, then hit the gym before I head home - that sounds like the best idea. We'll see how that works. I've refocused my food intake again also and feel a lot better. Over a period of about a year or so, I lost about 35 pounds and over the last month, I gained a small amount, about 5 lbs. and I really feel it on me. So I tightened up the type of food, poured lots more water down my throat and feel so much better again.

Man, I'm listening to Andrea Bocelli sing the Ave Maria - feel like I'm listening to an angel sing to another angel - so incredibly moving! Must be my Catholic roots!

Bad Blogger..Bad Bad Blogger

Well, it's been several days since my last post but after the Detroit Marathon (relay), I was pooped - it really took me quite a while to put all of the pieces back together. Last week I ran a few times at the gym, nothing more than a few miles at an easy pace, just enough to keep myself in the game. I've turned my attention to some cross training, trying to tone up the upper body a bit - have to be strong to run strong right?! It's fun to hit the weight machines and it couldn't be more convenient to do it at the student rec center right on campus. Today I started to head out to the gym after my 9 a.m. class and saw that I had a ticket on my car. I went over to campus parking and got that all squared away including a new parking permit and headed back to the gym. I got halfway inside and realized I didn't have my running shoes with me - DAMN! Oh well - I headed home, grabbed a sandwich, laced up the shoes and did free weights for about an hour at home. Probably won't run today unless I do it after my night class which doesn't get out until 9 p.m., although I find when I run, and run hard late at night, despite what some people say, I sleep like a baby!
